Me and Hubby went for a pre-marital blood test recently. Ok, I know we're already married and it's not like it's really "PRE"-marital...

Anyway, we did it because his sis was found to have a condition called Thalassemia minor. I looked it up the Internet and found this :
Thalassemia minor (or trait) is usually a benign condition that produces
only a mild anemia.

According to our Doctor, this is an inherited condition but it doesn't cause any harm to the person. However, when both partners have this condition, there is a chance that their offsprings will inherit what is known as Thalassemia MAJOR. Obviously, the major word says it all... The definition is :
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder. People with Thalassemia disease
are not able to make enough hemoglobin, which causes severe anemia.
Dr told us that IF a child inherits this, the child usually doesn't live pass 20 and will lead a life of daily blood transfusion...a very painful life. Hence, we were advised to be tested for it since there is a high chance that Hubby has Thalassemia minor.

The report came out on Friday and we were relieved that I am free from it...(altho Hubby has it...quite expected since we already knew his sis got it). Dr also advised me to get the Hep B injections which I will do so soon. FYI, the test includes many other checks including Rubella and other conditions which are relevant to pregnancies (I think).

Anyway, for those who are reading this, I think there is no harm checking it out, just to give yourself a peace of mind.
